5 Self-Love Tips For Home and Abroad
Moving to a new country, town, or even neighborhood can shift the way we take care of ourselves. I have been spending a lot more time alone since living abroad and in order to make sure depression doesn’t creep in, I have been practicing some self-love rituals. These help me connect with myself and my purpose when I am feeling lost, disconnected, or lonely.
These tips can be practiced whether you are at home or abroad, single or taken, or simply just want to treat and honor yourself and your body.
Meditation and Hypnosis:
To Be Magnetic courses have been monumental in my mental health journey. I have healed some serious trauma with this method and have overcome blocks that I believed would be a part of my lifelong story. I can’t afford traditional talk therapy right now so this is a great option for digging deep and doing the work. This shouldn’t replace therapy if you need extra support, but it’s a good starting point if you want to work through some baggage and start manifesting the life you really want.
Movement:
Alo yoga has some amazing online classes in yoga, pilates, barre, and HIIT. I have been super skeptical about online workouts, but all of the instructors on this site are incredibly knowledgable. There is a dynamic range of classes that keep me challenged and interested. They offer a 14-Day Free Trial and their monthly price is way cheaper than going to a yoga studio. Kait Hurley also teaches online and her workouts are killer, especially for that glorious booty. You can try four of her classes on the Wuhaus blog for free here and she offers a 14-Day Free Trial as well.
Spa Day at Home:
I have experimented a bit with making my own skincare and haircare. I have been pretty broke since moving overseas, so I have been finding some recipes that use ingredients that are likely in your pantry already such as avocado, olive oil, banana, etc. Some of the recipes I’ve been playing with can be found here and here.
Indulging:
From time to time a tall glass of red wine or a fresh pizza is exactly what I want. I make sure to eat plant-based and vegan about 80-90 percent of the time so that I can have treats when I crave them. I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, just pleasure. Listen to your body and what works best for you, I think I have found a good balance with mine and immediately understand when I have overdone it or need to make an adjustment.
Potions:
Having a healthy drink can make a world of difference for my mood. I have been obsessed with making potions like Golden Milk (turmeric latte), a Maca Mocha, or a Matcha Tea with all the fixings. I brought some adaptogenic herbs with me from the U.S., but I have seen them sold at the bulk stores and bio shops in Barcelona. They seem expensive at first but they last forever. I have been using mine almost every day for the last year and a half and I am only a 1/4 through my jars. Just try one at a time and see how you feel. The Golden Milk is a good starting point because the ingredients are inexpensive and the health benefits are incredible no matter what ails you.
These are just five of the things I do to take care of myself when I feel like I need a little extra love. I also think calling a good friend, hugging someone close to you, or dancing to your favorite music can be incredibly therapeutic.
