Armchair Travels: Antwerp and the Harry Potter Train Station

Once Upon a Train Journey, There was Antwerp

Traveling by train is one of my absolute favorite ways to travel. The seats are comfortable, the views are nice, and you can bring a picnic to enjoy along the way. When we first arrived at the train station in Antwerp, Belgium, I was blown away by the beauty of it. Scenes from Harry Potter were filmed there and I can certainly see why. It holds captivating magic within the ironwork, tile floors, and breathtaking windows.

I really only came for the train station (I would do the same for a library or an abandoned church) but the city was equally as whimsical. The Zurenborg District is a neighborhood of incredibly well-preserved art nouveau architecture. In another lifetime, my dream house would be on one of those streets, with a sweeping handrail and floral decorated door.

The wealth that is present in Antwerp is undeniable. The Diamond District is there and the well-preserved historical buildings are a testament to the reality that when a country is doing well financially, they can afford to hold on to their past treasures. Not of all of Europe has this luxury unfortunately, but to witness it here was a visual delight!
